The Afterlife of Data : Identity, Surveillance, and Capitalism in Trans Credit Reporting  / Lars Z. Mackenzie.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 4 (2017) 1 (feb), p. 45-60
bron: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 4 (2017) 1 (feb), p. 45-60
samenvatting: Credit reports, once solely used to determine individual creditworthiness, have in the past several decades become a tool for authentication processes not directly related to one's capacity to take on debt, namely, in rental housing and employment applications. When trans people change their first names to better align with their gender identities, they often become illegible to credit reporting systems. In this article, the author examines online discussion board posts about trans people's experiences with their credit reports, arguing that the issues trans people encounter illuminate the complex logics of neoliberal capitalism, predatory lending, and the 'afterlife' of identification data enabled by big data surveillance.

'Race', Culture, Power, Sex, Desire, Love : Writing in 'Men who have Sex with Men'  / Andil Gosine.

IDS Bulletin, 37 (2006) 5 (oct), p. 27-33
bron: IDS Bulletin jaargang: 37 (2006) 5 (oct), p. 27-33
samenvatting: "We're queer, we're here! (Get used to it!)" is a cherished and powerful refrain in gay and lesbian movements. Sexual dissidents have been written out of historical texts and continue to be invisibilised in contemporary ones, so this assertion is often a necessary starting point in struggles for rights, resources and social justice. That analysis seems to hold true in the field of international development. Its chief architect, John Maynard Keynes, may have enjoyed queer activities throughout his lifetime, but from the moment that the Bretton Woods institutions were founded, dominant development discourses represented the Third World as an exclusively heterosexual space. Micro- and macroeconomic theories, social programmes and policies of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and collaborating partners assumed and imposed a heteronormative outlook on the South, and effectively conspired with other forces (local forms of nationalism, patriarchy, homophobia, etc.) to deny the existence of, and/or actively condemn, anyone and any acts that did not subscribe to it. This view has begun to change of late, in part thanks to the efforts of sexual rights advocates and their allies, and because of HIV/AIDS. The debilitating impact of the virus, not just on individual victims but on whole communities and national economies, has shaken the leading actors in international development out of their slumber, and (finally) put questions about sexuality on the agenda. Consequently, people once rendered unimportant have earned significance, and there is now greater interest in the choices they make and the lives they lead. Queers have arrived, and the World Bank, UN agencies, IMF, their client governments, and so on, are beginning to 'get used to it'.

samenvatting: Across every region of the world, trans people face unacceptably high levels of violence and discrimination. Trans movements are fighting back, but their progress is hampered and their leaders risk burnout because they have very little funding. Global Philanthropy Project, American Jewish World Service, GATE, and Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice have produced Funder Briefing document to identify gaps and opportunities to increase the amount and quality of resources supporting these movements. The brief, containing data from 455 trans groups in 107 countries around the world, is a call to action for civil society and philanthropy to step up our collective support.

Beyond Gender Lens Investing.

Dreilinden (2019) 10-12-2019, p. 1-6
bron: Dreilinden (2019)10-12-2019, p. 1-6
samenvatting: On our journey to scope and size the queer investment universe, we started looking around the impact investment space to see how we could build on already existing approaches and frameworks. Luckily we didn't have to look very far as our friends at Criterion Institute (and many others) have already done fantastic work in a related field - gender lens investing (GLI)! GLI connects well to the way we want to approach queer impact investing. By reinterpreting GLI, or in some cases by just going back to its original intent, we wind up with the right foundation to build on. In the long run, we hope a queer impact lens will be part and parcel of any investment process or will become an investment strategy itself. Our overarching aim is to demonstrate that true diversity and inclusion lead to better decisions, as well as a better life for everyone.

The Queer Impact Investment Universe.

Dreilinden (2019) 10-12-2019, p. 1-8
bron: Dreilinden (2019)10-12-2019, p. 1-8
samenvatting: Queer businesses as well as enterprises focusing on queer communities are struggling to finance their transition from a micro to a medium-sized enterprise. There is strong demand for impact capital that would bridge the gap and empower queer communities in the Global South and East. In order to gather additional data points and to make an initial assessment, Dreilinden commissioned iGravity and FMELGBT to explore this hypothesis in four countries: Mexico, Poland, Slovakia and South Africa. This article is the first in a series sharing findings from these studies. It addresses the scope and size of the queer impact investment universe, while also discussing some of the enabling factors behind effective queer impact investing.
